Am I eligible for WIC?

Many different types of people participate in WIC across the state, and everyone is welcome at WIC! If you have any questions about your eligibility, please reach out to a WIC agency near you.

Who is WIC for?

The following people can be enrolled in WIC:

  • Pregnant women
  • Women who have had a baby within the past six months
  • Women who have been pregnant within the past six months
  • Breastfeeding women who have had a baby within the past year
  • Infants from birth to 1 year of age
  • Children from 1 year of age to their 5th birthday

Who can apply for WIC?

  • Pregnant women
  • Parents with an infant or child under the age of 5
  • Foster parent(s) or guardian(s) with an infant or child under age 5 in their care

Am I eligible?

To get WIC benefits, you must:

  • Live in Wisconsin.
  • Have a limited income. See Automatic eligibility and WIC income guidelines below.
  • Need help with health, nutrition, or breastfeeding for yourself or your child.
  • Have one of these apply to you:
    • You are pregnant now or had a baby in the past six months.
    • You are providing your breastmilk to a WIC enrolled baby under 1 year of age.
    • You care for a child younger than 5 years of age.

Automatic eligibility

You may be automatically eligible for WIC benefits if you already use one of these programs:

  • BadgerCare Plus
  • Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR)
  • FoodShare
  • Foster care or Kinship Care
  • Medicaid
  • Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF)
  • Wisconsin Works Program (W-2)

WIC income guidelines

Your family may also qualify for WIC based on your household size and gross income.

  • Household size includes people who live together and often share money and household expenses like rent or food.
  • WIC counts a pregnant person as two family members, or three if pregnant with twins, four for triplets, and so on.
  • Your gross household income is how much money you make before taxes or deductions. This includes any money you make including:
    • Job
    • Child support
    • Overtime
    • Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
    • Unemployment

Many working families are part of WIC. The WIC Income Eligibility Table (PDF) shows the most money your household can make and still get WIC benefits. This WIC Income Eligibility Table is valid from July 1, 2026 – June 30, 2027.

If you don't get a normal paycheck, your local WIC agency may ask for your employer to fill out a WIC Nutrition Program Employer Statement, F-40076, to show proof of your income.

Nondiscrimination statement

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) provides nondiscrimination statements for the WIC program.

To file a program discrimination complaint, a Complainant should complete a Form AD-3027, USDA Program Discrimination Complaint Form which can be obtained online at: https://www.usda.gov/sites/default/files/documents/ad-3027.pdf, from any USDA office, by calling 866- 632-9992, or by writing a letter addressed to USDA. The letter must contain the complainant’s name, address, telephone number, and a written description of the alleged discriminatory action in sufficient detail to inform the Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights (ASCR) about the nature and date of an alleged civil rights violation. The completed AD-3027 form or letter must be submitted to USDA by:
