Acronyms are often used by public and private agencies as timesaving, shorthand ways to communicate lengthy titles or basic concepts. This glossary provides a quick reference to the terms, acronyms and abbreviations commonly used by this Department.

    Legislative Audit Bureau.

  • LCC

    Legislative Council (Rules) Clearinghouse; reviews agency-proposed administrative rules for legal authority and conformance to drafting standards prior to agency hearings on the rules.

    A statewide public interest law firm concerned with advocating on behalf of public assistance clients.

  • LEP

    Limited English Proficiency

    Local Health Department

  • Life Safety Code

    National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 101 for the safety of life in buildings. Adopted by reference by the Federal government as one condition for provider participation under the Medicare and Medicaid programs. Adopted by reference by the Department in rules for nursing homes, FDDs and hospitals.

  • Living Will

    Also referred to by the public as the "Living Will," a form which enables a person to declare his or her wishes in advance concerning the use of life-sustaining procedures in the event of a terminal illness or injury when the person has become incompetent. Forms distributed by the Department's Division of Public Health.
