Supplemental Security Income In Wisconsin
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a monthly cash benefit paid by the federal Social Security Administration and state Department of Health Services to people in financial need who are 65 years old or older or people of any age who are blind or disabled and residents of Wisconsin.
You can receive the state SSI payment only if you qualify for a federal SSI payment. One exception is a small group of grandfathered SSI members who still receive the state SSI payment they qualified for in December of 1995.
Eligibility
You may be eligible for SSI payments if you have little or no income and if your assets are $2,000 or less for a single person or $3,000 or less for a married couple. Certain assets, such as your home or car, do not count.
Applying for Supplemental Security Income
You can apply for SSI at your nearest Social Security office. You do not have to apply separately for the state SSI payment. You will automatically receive the state SSI payment as long as you qualify for the federal SSI payment.
