Requirements for X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) Devices
A variety of XRF devices are now available on the market. Some contain a radioactive source. Others contain an x-ray tube instead. Requirements for licensing and user training on these devices vary.
Before buying an XRF
Before you buy an XRF to use for lead risk assessment or inspection work:
- Find the Performance Characteristics Sheet for the model on the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's website. You may only test for lead-based paint using an XRF that has a Performance Characteristics Sheet.
- Ask the manufacturer or authorized distributer whether the XRF model uses radioactive materials or an x-ray tube.
- If it uses radioactive materials, apply for a radioactive materials license before obtaining your XRF device and follow this Guidance for Portable Gauges or XRF Devices, P-45025. (PDF)
- If it uses an x-ray tube, register it online.
You don't need to provide XRF training records when applying for certification as a lead risk assessor or inspector. The Certification Unit will not verify adequate training for XRF use. You are responsible to follow all applicable laws when using an XRF.
For more information, email or call 608-267-4797 to reach the Radiation Protection Section, which licenses and maintains registration of all XRF devices.
