Respiratory Virus Death Data
These charts provide a weekly breakdown of the percent of deaths reported in Wisconsin associated with the respiratory viruses SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), as well as deaths associated with pneumonia where a specific viral cause is not reported. The data are available statewide and can be further visualized by Wisconsin public health region.

How to use the data visualizations
The dashboards on this page are interactive and show the percent of deaths among Wisconsinites that are associated with COVID-19, influenza, RSV, and pneumonia. Each visual includes a slider allowing you to change the date range for that visual. Each visual also includes a dropdown menu allowing you to filter data to show data for one of the five Wisconsin public health regions.
The first visual shows the combined percent of deaths by week associated with respiratory viruses; this includes deaths associated with COVID-19, influenza, RSV, and pneumonia.
The second visual shows the percent of deaths by week associated with COVID-19, influenza, RSV, or pneumonia. Additionally, you can use the check boxes to add or remove lines representing deaths associated with each illness.
Technical data notes and data sources
Data source: The data in these visualizations come from data from Wisconsin death records filed with The State Vital Records Office.
Deaths were included on this dashboard if a respiratory illness was listed as the underlying cause, contributing cause, immediate cause, or other significant condition contributing to a death on the death record, as detailed in the table below. For new deaths with no ICD-10 codes assigned to the underlying or contributing cause of death, literal text in the immediate cause, other cause, or other significant conditions fields are used. Once an ICD-10 code is assigned to a death, only ICD-10 codes are used to classify the death. This means that categorization of cause of death is subject to change as ICD-10 codes are assigned or refined.
Visuals will be updated weekly, but the most recent data will be two weeks behind to allow for more complete cause of death information.
