Healthcare-Associated Infections: Data
The Wisconsin Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAI) Prevention Program conducts statewide HAI surveillance and reports aggregate data to monitor trends. HAI data is reported by hospitals through the National Healthcare Safety Network, a national HAI reporting system developed and maintained by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).
This webpage contains Wisconsin HAI reports and other data.

Wisconsin standardized infection ratios (SIRs)
The SIR is the ratio of the number of observed HAIs to the number of predicted infections. The SIR is risk-adjusted to account for the underlying risk of infection in the population being measured. Below are SIRs for selected HAIs. The SIR enables “apples to apples” comparisons of HAI data across facilities and hospital unit types, as well as comparisons with state and national data.
Abbreviations
CAUTI: Catheter-associated urinary tract infection
CDI: Clostridioides difficile infection
CLABSI: Central line-associated bloodstream infection
COLO: Colon surgery
HPRO: Hip prosthesis surgery
HYST: Abdominal hysterectomy
IVAC: Infection-related ventilator-associated complication
KPRO: Knee prosthesis surgery
MRSA: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus
NICU: Neonatal intensive care unit
SSI: Surgical site infection
VAE: Ventilator-associated event
Acute care hospitals
Critical access hospitals
SSI SIRs for acute care and critical access hospitals
Surgical site infections data
Surgical site infections (SSIs) are infections that occur after surgery, in the area of the body where the procedure took place. SSIs are currently the most frequently reported serious HAIs among Wisconsin hospitals. Many hospitals and quality improvement organizations are working together to reduce these infections.
The Wisconsin HAI Prevention Program provides frequently updated SSI data to monitor statewide progress toward SSI reduction.
