If the animal was showing signs of rabies at the time of the exposure, initiate post-exposure prophylaxis treatment regimen as soon as possible.

If animal was acting normally, consult with public health officials and consider on a case-by-case basis. Consider circumstances and nature of the exposure as well as vaccination history of animal and whether prompt wound cleansing had occurred.
