Bats: Bat IS Available for Testing

Return to Rabies prevention flowchart introduction

Submit bat carcass to State Laboratory of Hygiene as soon as possible for rabies testing.

Post-exposure prophylaxis can generally be withheld until laboratory results are known, but if lab results will be delayed by over 36-48 hours from the time of exposure, or if the exposure involved head/neck wounds, consider initiating prophylaxis while lab results are pending.
