Health Counts in Wisconsin
Cancer 1995
The 1995 cancer data files are now complete. Data were
collected on 24,607 new cases of reportable cancer diagnosed in Wisconsin in 1995
(Wisconsin residents only). The number of Wisconsin resident deaths attributed to
reportable cancer in 1995 was 10,521. While cancer incidence rates for males and females
have steadily increased since 1990, cancer mortality rates for both males and females have
been steadily decreasing for the same time period. The increased incidence could be due to
several factors, including more complete reporting, increased screening for cancers and
increased overall awareness of the disease.

|
| 1 Percent totals may not sum to 100 due to
rounding.
2 Includes non-reportable cancers; does not
include residents of nursing homes and other institutions.
3 The average difference between the age at
death and the expected age at death, calculated from Wisconsin life expectancy tables for
1993-95.ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Reportable Cancers. All malignant in situ cancers (involving only the
cells in which they began, with no spread to other tissues) and invasive cancers except
basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas of the skin.
Age-adjusted Rates. Age-adjusted rates take into account diverse age
distributions between populations. They also permit comparisons with data from other state
and national organizations. An age-specific rate for each age group was determined, then
weighted by multiplying it by the proportion of the 1970 U.S. standard population in that
age group. The age-adjusted rate is the sum of the weighted age-specific rates.
Extent of Disease. "Local" includes invasive and in situ
tumors confined to the organ of origin; "non-local" includes all regional and
distant tumors.
No Treatment Reported. Includes cases not receiving cancer-directed treatment,
cases receiving care out-of-state for which no treatment information was available, and
cases in which the patient refused or the physician did not recommend treatment.
Sources of Data. Incidence and treatment data are from the Cancer Reporting
System; mortality data are drawn from Wisconsin resident death certificates; cancer
screening data are obtained from the 1995 Wisconsin Behavioral Risk Factor Survey; and the
percent of adults ever diagnosed with cancer is from the 1995 Wisconsin Family Health
Survey.
