Limitations/Comments:
The recommendations in this priority area are largely informed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Guide to Breastfeeding Interventions, available online at: www.cdc.gov/breastfeeding/. Although the CDC report draws heavily on the reviews of the Cochrane Collaboration, a well-respected source of research in public health, its methodology for categorizing interventions is not outlined explicitly.

The CDC review included few studies of hospital-based interventions, such as rooming-in and early maternal contact. In addition, studies often evaluated multiple interventions simultaneously, making it difficult to ascertain the benefit of each individual activity. Only published reports in English were reviewed.
