Tracking Health Conditions

Definitions of Mortality Measures

This page provides the code groupings used to define the mortality-based measures of the priority health conditions. Most measures use the underlying cause of death; a few measures use any mention of the condition (if disease is listed as an underlying or contributing cause) on the death certificate.

The International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) (exit DHS) is used to code all reported causes of deaths that occurred in 1999 and later. Deaths that occurred in 1979-1998 were coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9) (exit DHS). Please refer to the trends analysis caution before interpreting trend changes between 1998 and subsequent years.

These ICD code groupings follow categories established by the National Center for Health Statistics, unless otherwise noted.

Cerebrovascular Diseases
Cause of Death ICD 10 ICD 9
Cerebrovascular Diseases I60-I69 430-434,
436-438

Ischemic Heart Disease
Cause of Death ICD 10  ICD 9
Ischemic Heart Disease I20-I25 410-414,
429.2

Congestive Heart Failure and Other Heart Disease
Cause of Death ICD 10  ICD 9
Congestive Heart Failure and Other Heart Disease I00 - I09,
I26 - I51
390 - 398,
415 - 417,
420 - 429.1,
429.3 - 429.9

Congestive Heart Failure
Cause of Death ICD 10  ICD 9
Congestive Heart Failure I50.0 428.0

Other Heart Disease
Cause of Death ICD 10  ICD 9
Other Heart Disease I00 - I09,
I26 - I51
390 - 398,
415 - 417,
420 - 429.1 except 428.0,
429.3 - 429.9

Hypertension - Any Mention (available for 1993 and subsequent years)
Cause of Death ICD 10  ICD 9
Essential (Primary) Hypertension and Hypertensive Renal Disease I10 - I12  401 - 403
Hypertensive Heart Disease I11 402
Hypertensive Heart and Renal Disease I13 404
Many people with hypertension may not die from the disease directly, but it may be reported on the death certificate as a contributing cause. Therefore, any mention of hypertension as a cause of death is counted in this measure.

COPD: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Cause of Death ICD 10  ICD 9
Chronic and Unspecified Bronchitis IJ40-J42 490-491
Emphysema J43  492
Asthma J45-J46 493
Other Chronic Lower Respiratory Diseases J44, J47 494, 496

Pneumonia and Influenza
Cause of Death ICD 10  ICD 9
Pneumonia/Influenza J10-J18 480-487

Diabetes - Any Mention (available for 1993 and subsequent years)
Cause of Death ICD 10  ICD 9
Diabetes Mellitus E10-E14  250
Since many diabetes-related deaths result directly from multiple cardiovascular events, diabetes may be reported as a contributing cause instead of the underlying cause. Therefore, any mention of diabetes as a cause of death is counted in this measure. (These codes do not include gestational diabetes, hyperglycemia NOS, neonatal diabetes, and non-clinical diabetes.)

Alzheimer's disease - Any Mention (available for 1993 and subsequent years)
Cause of Death ICD 10  ICD 9
Alzheimer's Disease G30  331.0

Many people with Alzheimer's disease may not die from the disease directly, but it may be reported on the death certificate as a contributing cause. Therefore, any mention of Alzheimer's disease as a cause of death is counted. Caution: the number and rate of reported Alzheimer's disease deaths increased dramatically from 1998 to 1999, apparently due to the implementation of the IDC-10 coding system (exit DHS) in 1999.
