Radon Measurement and Mitigation Contractors

Wisconsin has no radon regulations. As a result, homeowners are best served by educating themselves as much as possible before hiring a contractor and having a system installed. Before selecting a contractor from the Wisconsin list, first read the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) booklet Consumers Guide to Radon Reduction. On page 4 there is a checklist to use as a guide for selecting a contractor.

The following are some additional general tips for those who need to hire a contractor.

1. The certified individual must show up at the job site, at least to supervise, although they don't have to stay throughout the work. When inquiring about estimates, ask the person answering a call if the certified individual will be doing the work or at least inspect the system, and be sure he or she does.
2. The fan must be outside the basement and the exhaust stack must go up to the roof, at least 10 feet above ground and 2 feet above any windows less than 10 feet away. If the exhaust is released at the sill of a house, some of this radon can enter the house through openings at the sill plate (where the basement sucks it in), and potentially into nearby windows. Studies have shown the average indoor radon can be increased by 1 pCi/L or more by these effects. In addition, experienced EPA contractors show that the joints and couplings to radon fans tend to leak radon on the high pressure side, significantly reducing the effectiveness of mitigation systems with fans in basements.
