Dental Utilization Data Tables

The following tables provide Medicaid and BadgerCare dental utilization data by state fiscal year. The data are listed by year and then by county. Statewide data is available at the bottom of the county selection page.

A state fiscal year runs from July 1 — June 30. For example, FY 2006 runs from 7/1/05 — 6/30/06.

The tables provide the following data:

Total Recipients — The number of recipients eligible for Medicaid and BadgerCare in each county during the fiscal year.

Recipients Obtaining Dental Services — The unduplicated count and percentage of recipients residing in that county for whom Medicaid paid for at least one dental service in that fiscal year. Recipients may have seen one or multiple providers in the same county or in different counties.

Total Medicaid Certified Providers — The number of providers who were Medicaid certified in that year. Providers were assigned to a county based on their most recent practice location as reported to Medicaid. This location does not always represent all locations where the provider practices or where they practiced in previous years.

Unduplicated Recipients — The unduplicated count of Medicaid and BadgerCare recipients served by providers in that county, regardless of whether the recipient lives in that county or a different county and regardless of the number of services received by the recipient.

Recipients per Dentist — The number of unduplicated recipients divided by the total number of Medicaid Certified Providers in that county.

Notes:

  1. A dental service is defined as an encounter with a dental provider, regardless of its nature or complexity. It may include emergency care, prophylaxis (cleanings and exams), fluoride treatments, sealants, repairs, and complex dental procedures.
  2. These numbers are not intended to provide an indication of the number of providers that are currently accepting new Medicaid and BadgerCare clients. Recipients need to contact the provider’s office directly to determine if services are currently available.
