Recent federal legislation delayed implementation of a new law requiring prescriptions for Medicaid recipients that are not phoned, faxed, or electronically transferred to a pharmacy to be written or printed on tamper-resistant prescription pads or computer paper. Refer to the September 2007 Wisconsin Medicaid and BadgerCare Update (2007-65), titled “Tamper-Resistant Prescription Pad Requirement,” for more details on this requirement.
This requirement is now mandatory April 1, 2008.
Despite the delay in implementation, the Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services (DHFS) encourages providers to begin using these prescription pads and computer paper as a means to improve prescription security and reduce fraud in the Medicaid program.
The DHFS still intends to provide a limited supply of free pads and paper to Medicaid providers beginning November 1, 2007, through its contracted vendor, Standard Register.
Information on obtaining a supply of free pads and paper will be provided in a future Update.
