Joint
Statement on the Importance of Nutrition and Physical Activity in the
Prevention of Obesity and Other Chronic Diseases (PDF,
36 KB)
In 2004, the Wisconsin Division of Public Health (DPH) organized a
Program Integration Work Group to provide opportunities for the programs
within DPH to work together to maximize program resources, impact and
outcomes. The Work Group promotes communication, collective thinking, and
problem solving about crosscutting issues, such as risk factor reduction.
As a result of the Program Integration Work Group, the Advocacy and
Public Policy Work Group was convened. This Work Group subcommittee brought
together advocacy and community-based organization representatives from each
of the chronic disease prevention partner groups to discuss collaborative
efforts. Healthy eating and being physically active were identified as
behaviors that cross-cut many of the programs. The Importance of Nutrition
and Physical Activity in the Prevention of Obesity and Other Chronic
Diseases: A Joint Statement
was developed to
highlight the need for collaboration among all sectors to address the
epidemic of obesity in Wisconsin.
The DPH Nutrition and Physical Activity Program was awarded a 5-year
cooperative agreement from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC) in 2003. This program will provide statewide leadership for preventing
overweight and obesity through improved nutrition and increased physical
activity. The Wisconsin Nutrition and Physical Activity State Plan,
developed by the Wisconsin Partnership for Activity and Nutrition,
will be released in fall 2005. It is a comprehensive plan to address obesity
and will serve as a guiding document for programs, coalitions and
organizations.
