World Breastfeeding Week

Breastfeeding Week is August 1-7, 2009 worldwide. Governor Doyle has proclaimed August as "Breastfeeding Promotion Month" in Wisconsin.

Having a plan of support in place before an emergency occurs is essential. Emergencies can happen at any time – from a house fire, to a natural disaster, to losing a job. Breastfeeding is a safety net when a disaster strikes. It is lifesaving for babies in a crisis situation.

Breastfeeding saves lives!

Infants are at greatest risk in an emergency.

  • Clean water may not be available to prepare formula and to clean bottles. Breastmilk is always clean and safe.

  • In a flu outbreak or risk of the spread of disease, breastmilk contains antibodies that fight infection.

  • With breastfeeding, babies always have food that is warm, ready, and available at any time.

  • When money is tight, breastmilk is free – saving $1,800 per year or more by not buying formula, and reducing health care costs because baby is healthier.

  • During a stressful time, breastfeeding relaxes mothers and calms infants.

For more information and help with breastfeeding, contact a local WIC clinic near you.
