Events in November

On Saturday, November 21, 2009, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is celebrating, along with the rest of the world, the 11th annual National Survivors of Suicide Day. Visit the AFSP Web site to find an event near you, register to watch an event on your computer, or contribute to the cause.

November is Prematurity Awareness Month. Every year 13 million babies are born too soon, and this puts their budding life in jeopardy before it even starts. Read this blog and visit the March of Dimes site to learn more about healthy births or to get involved.

November is Adoption Awareness Month. This year's theme is "You don't have to be perfect to be a perfect parent." To learn more, visit the Child Welfare Information Gateway of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

November is Diabetes Awareness Month. Visit the Web site of the American Diabetes Association to learn interesting facts about the disease, download culturally tested materials, or find an event in your area.

November is Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month. Visit the Web site of the Alzheimer's Association to learn about Alzheimer's, join a community, find an event, or shop for the cause.

  • Event: Interacambio Language Exchange
    Dates: November 3 and November 17
    Time: 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
    Location: Experanza Unida Building, third floor
    Description: Language/culture exchange where people gather to practice English or Spanish language skills. Native English speakers learning Spanish are paired with native Spanish speakers learning English for a bicultural exchange. No RSVP necessary!

  • Event: Reiki I Training Workshop
    Dates: November 14 and 15
    Time: 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
    Location: Esperanza Unida Building, fourth floor
    Description: A gentle, healing art that draws on universal life energy to benefit persons of any age, in any state of health. Reiki offers comfort, nurturance, and support for the good health and balance of your mind, body, and emotions. Participants will receive the First Degree Reiki Attunement, connecting you to the unlimited source of Reiki energy. An overview of the meaning, purposes, effects and history of Reiki energy therapy is discussed. Procedures for giving a complete Reiki treatment to others and to oneself are also provided.
    Prerequisite: Having received Reiki prior to taking first class. Cost: $225

  • Event: Immigration and Health
    Dates: November 5, 12, 19
    Time: 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
    Location: Esperanza Unida Building, third floor
    Description: Proyecto Salud is offering a three-part course/fundraiser to raise awareness of the Mexican immigrant experience and its binational effect on health, and to support the work of Proyecto Salud.
    Cost: $325 full course; $120 single course
