Substance Abuse in Wisconsin
A survey study published in 1989 produced four
conclusions about substance abuse among people with disabilities in
Wisconsin.2
-
Respondents with certain specific types of
disabilities (spinal cord injury, orthopedic disabilities, vision
impairment, amputation) can be classified as heavy or moderate
consumers of alcohol in approximately 40 to 50 percent of the
reported cases.
-
People disabled in accidents involving alcohol
continue to drink excessively after release from medical
institutions.
-
Enabling behavior may be present in cases of heavy
and moderate rates of drinking.
-
Almost 20 percent of those taking prescription
medicine were concerned to some degree about the amount prescribed.
