Disclaimer: All external hyperlinks are provided for your information and for the benefit of the general public.  The Department of Health Services does not testify to, sponsor, or endorse the accuracy of the information provided on externally linked pages.

PRAMS, the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System, is an ongoing survey of new mothers conducted jointly by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state health departments.

In each participating state, PRAMS collects population-based data on maternal attitudes and experiences before, during, and shortly after pregnancy. Wisconsin began participating in PRAMS in 2007.

What are the goals of Wisconsin PRAMS?

  • To help us understand why our African American infant mortality rate, the highest in the nation, has not improved in the past 20 years. In 2006, African Americans in Wisconsin experienced 17.2 infant deaths per 1,000 live births, compared to 4.9 deaths per 1,000 live births for whites.

  • To collect high-quality, population-based data not found in other data sources, on topics related to successful pregnancy and healthy infancy.

  • To translate results into information for planning and evaluating public health programs and policy.

  • To improve the health of Wisconsin babies.
