Steps in the Process: Evaluation (continued)

Depending on your child's needs, a number of different professionals will
participate in the evaluation to determine your child's eligibility. Some of them may be:
- early
childhood special educator, who looks at the way your child learns, functions and
understands the world around them;
- occupational
therapist, who looks at your child's small muscle movement;
- physical
therapist, who looks at your child's large muscle movement;
- registered
nurse, who looks at your child's growth and development, and how your child's
health needs might affect his or her development;
- social
worker, who may assist in identifying your family's priorities, concerns and
needed resources; and
- speech pathologist, who looks at your child's ability to communicate.
The EI team will use your information, observations of your child, and the needed
informal and formal testing to evaluate your child's ability to:
- learn
(cognitive development);
- move, see
and hear (physical/motor development);
- communicate
and understand other's communication (speech, language and communication
development);
- respond to
and develop relationships with other people (social and emotional development);
and
- eat, dress
and care for daily living needs (adaptive behavior and self help development).
Your service coordinator will select at least two
qualified personnel from two different disciplines, in areas of your child's suspected
need, to be part of the EI team along with you and the service coordinator. If
appropriate, your service coordinator may serve as one of the early intervention
professionals from one of the disciplines. Ch.
