SECRETARY HAYDEN APPLAUDS JOINT FINANCE COMMITTEE FOR
CREATION OF NEW DEPARTMENT OF CHILDREN AND FAMILIES
MADISON - Department of Health and Family Services Secretary Kevin R.
Hayden today applauded the Joint Finance Committee for voting to approve
the creation of the Wisconsin Department of Children and Families.
"I am encouraged by the Joint Finance Committee’s bipartisan
support of Governor Doyle’s proposal to create the Department of
Children and Families," said Secretary Hayden. "This will be the
first time that Wisconsin will have a cabinet agency devoted to helping
and protecting the most vulnerable children and families in our state. The
creation of this new department will allow us to promote the economic and
social well-being of Wisconsin’s children and families, while keeping
children safe."
The new Department will integrate key state programs from the
Departments of Health and Family Services and Workforce Development to
make it easier for families to get the services that they need. The
structure of the department acknowledges the fact that many families are
touched by the child care, child welfare and W-2 programs simultaneously,
and that these systems need to be better integrated to improve outcomes
for children and to move families toward economic independence
The new agency will be responsible for child welfare, child support,
child care regulation and subsidy, W-2, Women, Infants and Children (WIC)
Program, Emergency Food Assistance, and the Home Visiting Program for
first time parents.
