Competency To Stand Trial Program
Individuals charged with crimes must be competent to understand the
court process and the possible outcomes of that process. If any
representative of the judicial process questions whether an individual
is competent, the court may order a competency evaluation. If the
court orders the department (DHS) to conduct such an evaluation, a
statewide program exists whereby most of these evaluations are conducted
in the local jails.
